This is an excellent early Pre-War production 2nd Model Luftwaffe Officer's dagger, complete with portepee and belt hanger. It is a fine Solingen-Produced example made by the well known firm \u003cem\u003eErnst Pack \u0026amp; Söhne of Solingen\u003c\/em\u003e. The celluloid grip of this dagger is still the original ivory white color, which is very rare to see! Most fade to yellow and orange over the years due to the instability of the material. It has a nice slightly tapered shape, and is wrapped with bound twisted wires. There is just a tiny bit of cracking hear the pommel fitting, and some minor scuffs and stains.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe hilt mounts are in similar condition with a lovely patina of age. The pommel is very good and still shows most of the original detail. The \"mobile\" swass on both sides are clear and the oak leaves around them are raised out and heavily hand enhanced. The pommel appears to be solid aluminum, which was given a blue gray finish overall, with the raised areas polished. It does have a bit of wear around the edges, as is often seen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe crossguard is also made of Aluminum, which was an \"Air Age\" material, which was used to make most airplanes. It was considered fitting and desirable for the eagle-shaped guard to be made of this material. The front side is an eagle with a breast and talon area that is vaulted out much more so than the crossguards seen on other types of daggers. The guard shows little wear and has great feathering on the eagle. The bird, of course, flies to the left and grasps a mobile swas in his talons. The reverse panel is decorated with small pebbling, which is still clear. Wrapped around the grip just above the guard is a very nice original bullion portepee, which has had the woven aluminum covering oxidize, giving it a whitish hue. This has also made the material delicate, with some splits in the covering.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe blade on this example is nickel plated, something we very rarely see on 2nd Model daggers! Only the earliest produced special order examples were plated, quickly replaced by polished bright steel. The rear ricasso of the blade is etched with the large \"Siegfried\" trademark logo of \u003cstrong\u003eErnst Pack \u0026amp; Söhne\u003c\/strong\u003e, which is in excellent condition. The mark shows their trademark \"Young Siegfried wielding a hammer\" Logo, surrounded by a stylized banner. Anthony Carter's book \u003cem\u003eGERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS\u003c\/em\u003e, this firm used this trademark on Army Officer swords during before the war and during the early years. They mostly made daggers so there is not as much information regarding the swords. The company survived the war, until it was sold in the 1960s to another knife company from Solingen, and the maker mark continued to be used into the 1990s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe blade is in excellent condition, with the original nickel plating almost 100%. There is just a bit of runner wear and the usual swirl marks from cleaning. The tip is fully intact and the edges are correctly unsharpened. Really a great blade here!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis steel scabbard is a fine, straight example, though polishing over the decades has removed small areas of the original plating, which looks to have been blue oxide over silver plate, with a copper \"flash\" coat. This can still be seen in areas,, and it does look quite nice, with a bit of steel oxidation in areas. There are no major dents that we can see. The bands are zinc alloy, showing hand enhanced oak leaves tipped at a 45 degree angle, with some wear around the hanger rings. The throat is retained by two dome headed screws, on the narrow sides of the scabbard, and is the narrower style seen.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAttached to the scabbard is a very good condition belt hanger, with all spring clips fully functional. The scabbard end clips are the more complex and desirable sliding type. The buckles and keepers are embossed with the same oak and acorn motif seen throughout the dagger. The hardware is marked \u003cstrong\u003eD.R.G.M.\u003c\/strong\u003e, indicating that these were registered in the German trademark office. The end clip is also marked on the back with \u003cstrong\u003eRZM\u003c\/strong\u003e and maker code \u003cstrong\u003eU.E. 10.\u003c\/strong\u003e. \"U.E\" indicates \u003cem\u003eUniformeffekten Erlaubnißschein\u003c\/em\u003e, (Uniform Accessories Licence), and the manufacturer’s numerical code, \"10\". It appears the combined RZM\/U.E., markings were utilized circa May 1933 to March 1935. These were used when the RZM was still being officially organized. There is unfortunately no listing of the early RZM makers. The straps still have almost complete velvet backing, and the fittings are all in very good condition.
