original-wwii-german-2nd-model-luftwaffe-dagger-with-rzm-marked-hanger-damaged-grip
Original WWII German 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger with RZM-Marked Hanger - Damaged Grip

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a nice example of a 2nd Model Luftwaffe dagger, which unfortunately has suffered damage to the grip over the past 70+ years. The grips of these daggers are often of celluloid plastic over wood, which unfortunately can become very brittle over the years, so it easily cracks and breaks, as this one has. However it still has a nice shape an color, as well as the original twisted wire wrapping. It comes complete with an original belt hanger, which seems to have seen a lot of use.

The hilt mounts are very nice on this dagger, though there is a small amount of wear. The pommel is aluminum, a very common material used on 2nd model Luftwaffe Daggers. The oak leaves around them are raised out and heavily hand enhanced. There is not much wear of any kind on the pommel.

The crossguard is made of Aluminum, which was an "Air Age" material, which was used to make most airplanes. It was considered fitting and desirable for the eagle-shaped guard to be made of this material. The front side is an eagle with a breast and talon area that is vaulted out much more so than the crossguards seen on other types of daggers. This guard shows little wear and has excellent feathering on the eagle. The bird, of course, flies to the left and grasps a mobile swas in his talons. The reverse panel is decorated with small pebbling and still has a good portion of the original factory blackening. The ferrule looks to be solid nickel or another alloy, and is still excellent.

This scabbard is a fine, straight example, having a good aged zinc plating, with a lovely patina. The aluminum bands are well defined and have hand enhanced oak leaves tipped at a 45 degree angle, with little wear. The throat is retained by a single screw on the rear of the scabbard.

The carbon steel blade is in very good condition, and has not been sharpened or dropped on the tip. There are some stained areas, however it still has a good deal of the original factory final polish crossgrain throughout. It may have been polished a bit during its life time, and there is no maker mark that we can see, however this was not uncommon. Some blade makers would sell unmarked blades to fitting manufacturers, who did not leave any markings either. The pebbled leather blade washer is unfortunately missing, but the needle-like tip is still intact.

Comes complete with genuine original hangers that are in very good condition with no major tears, and a felt backing. The Buckles and other hardware seems to be zinc, and the clips and other portions are marked D.R.G.M., indicating they are a trademarked design. The back of the belt clip also has the RZM logo next to U. E. 10. "U.E" indicates Uniformeffekten Erlaubnißschein, (Uniform Accessories Licence), and the manufacturer’s numerical code, "10". It appears the combined RZM/U.E., markings were utilized circa May 1933 to March 1935. These were used when the RZM was still being officially organized. We unfortunately do not have information on who supplier "10" was.

The felt backing of the hanger is mostly worn off on the upper strap, and the lower one shows wear as well. Also the spring on the belt clip has broken, but could be replaced. The two clips that attach to the scabbard are fully functional.

This is a nice 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger, offered in somewhat damaged condition with hanger, ready to display!

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-wwii-german-2nd-model-luftwaffe-dagger-with-rzm-marked-hanger-damaged-grip
