Item Description
Original Item: Mortar designs of WW1 number in the hundreds, but one of the most unique is the Brandt pneumatic mortar. It was introduced in 1915 by the French and was eventually copied by the Germans.
The type B was smaller then the first 1915 model and was comprised of cast aluminum. The 40.5 inch barrel was mounted on a cast aluminum, fixed angle of 42 ° mount. It was fired by air pressure with a system of tanks and pistons. It fired a 60mm shell.
Pneumatic mortars were chosen over hydraulics for many reasons but mainly because an operator would have to pump the hydraulic model. The big advantage was silence in operation and no flash.
The original brass data plate reads-
TYPE B 1916
Brevet (illegible)
