It is decorated with embossed "Dragon" motifs, and is very ornate, typical of the Victorian era. Those produced during the 20th century were usually less decorated. It still retains the officers brass ring chin strap, attached to Rose shaped side retainers.

The front of the helmet has a very nice Silver coat of arms from the Scottish Capital City of Edinburgh, showing a "Fouled Anchor" over the Castle of Edinburgh, supported by a woman on the left, and a doe on the right. Under this is a banner reading NISI DOMINUS FRUSTRA, the motto of Edinburgh, meaning "Without the Lord, frustration."

Coming from long time storage, it has some dings to the comb but is in really good condition. Sadly the leather lining is absent, though there are still traces of the glue used to attach it originally. Comes complete with it's correct brass interlocking ring chin scales mounted on black leather, now somewhat stiff and deteriorated from age.

A great looking item maybe 140 years old, ready to display!

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-victorian-scottish-city-of-edinburgh-fire-brigade-officers-merryweather-brass-fire-helmet-c-1890
