One-of-a-Kind. During the Gothic Revival of the second half of the 19th Century the demand for original antique weapons exceeded the supply, thus prompting the manufacture of numerous copies. The glaive was a distinctly Italian polearm, primarily for parade and ceremonial use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is an outstanding example of a 19th Century copy of a medieval Glaive polearm head. The piece measures 39 ½” long, with fantastic etching on both sides and a backblade that has broken off, with 2 ½” of it retained. The blade is 3 ¼” wide at its widest point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany of these copies were hand forged and closely resembled the originals. Now that they have genuine age and patina it is often difficult to differentiate between the copies and the originals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne side of the head bears motifs of old armor, musical instruments, and floral patterns, while the other side depicts a glorious battle scene of 18 soldiers. The etching is a bit worn and is only able to be clearly seen in the light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe shaft section only measures 5¾”, and there are some very tiny wood fragments inside of the hole.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAn outstanding Victorian copy of a Glaive head, just missing some of the backblade as shown.
