Original U.S. WWII Zippo Type Lighter named to Pvt. Merton Drake - marked Iwo-Jima 2/19/1945

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. What a story this little guy could tell. This "Zippo" style lighter is painted in soid olive drab paint with the name and serial number of M. DRAKE / 32677380 scratched in on one side, and IWO-JIMA 2/19/45 on the other. A cursory search of the serial number found one Pvt. Merton C. Drake, originally from Binghamton, N.Y.. He enlisted in 1942 and is listed with a civilian occupation of "Skilled mechanics and repairmen, n.e.c.". Most likely his service involved making use of his repair skills, which would have been very in demand supporting the invasion at Iwo-Jima.

This came to us from an elderly gentleman from up state New York, but regrettably we got no chance to talk to him. That's it, a piece of history that could possible still work just sitting in your pocket. Ready to display!
