McCord Radiator and Manufacturing Company of Detroit, Michigan was selected by the Ordnance Department as the principal producer of M1 steel helmet shells. The bodies were formed from Hadfield manganese steel supplied by major American steel manufacturers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis helmet has the correct mid to late war swivel chinstrap loops, commonly referred to as bales, and a stainless steel rim with a front seam. The swivel bale configuration was introduced in late 1943 after problems developed with the earlier fixed loops breaking during service. Stainless steel rims were used through much of WWII before production transitioned to manganese steel rims later in the war. The front seam configuration further places the shell within the wartime production period. The rim is beginning to split slightly at the front, as shown.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe helmet retains an original mid-war OD green chinstrap with stamped steel fittings. The webbing has become extremely dark from age, handling, and service wear and is now heavily worn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe included liner is an original WWII high pressure M1 helmet liner manufactured by Westinghouse Electric Company. It is identified by the embossed \u003cstrong\u003eW\u003c\/strong\u003e logo in the crown. Westinghouse was one of the largest producers of M1 helmet liners during WWII and began deliveries in 1942.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe liner is in very heavily worn condition. Much of the original suspension is missing, and the remaining webbing is torn and deteriorated. The metal fittings show heavy oxidation. The original sweatband and liner chinstrap are no longer present.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOverall, the helmet shows service wear, including some paint loss, scuffing, scratches, oxidation, and wear to both the shell and liner.
