This is an excellent example of a 22mm parachute flare Sedgley Signal Pistol, Mark 5, in lovely fully functional condition, complete with an original holster and belt. As part of consolidated wartime efforts, lifeboats for all sea going Merchant Marine vessels were to have a standard compliment of emergency provisions overseen by the United States Coast Guard (USCG). They in turn had direct coordination with the US Navy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSedgley made two signals pistols for the US Navy, for the Bureau of Ships they supplied the 10-gauge Mark 5 with a 22mm bore, and for the Merchant Marine, the Mark-IV as approved by the USCG. Each service had a differing standard flare, the BuShips was 10-gauge and for Merchant Marine the 37mm parachute type.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the top strap of the barrel it reads:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ccenter\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSIGNAL PISTOL MARK 5 R.F. SEDGLEY, INC. 1944\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/center\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe grips are marked \u003cstrong\u003eUSN\u003c\/strong\u003e on both sides, which is uncommon, as often the marking was removed when being sold out of Navy storage. The barrel, frame, and grip are all marked with part number \u003cstrong\u003e242692\u003c\/strong\u003e each with a different number suffix, \u003cstrong\u003eA-1\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eA-2\u003c\/strong\u003e \u0026amp; \u003cstrong\u003eA-3\u003c\/strong\u003e. There is also \u003cstrong\u003eS\u003c\/strong\u003e in a circle on the right side of the breech. Pistol is fully functional and retains its complete firing pin, which still dry fires.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original canvas holster is in great unissued condition, with a functional snap and rear belt hooks. The back of the holster is correctly marked \u003cstrong\u003eSIGNAL PISTOL HOLSTER \/ Mk. 5\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is attached to a 10 Gauge ammunition belt, which has 32 loops for holding shells. The Mk. 5 uses 10 gauge shells, so it could easily use the hardware already designed for shotguns. This one is however specifically designated for signal cartridges.
