This is an heavily field-worn condition size 38 Pattern 1944 United States Marine Corps Camouflage Utility Set. This cotton HBT (Herring Bone Twill) Camouflage pattern jacket was issued to Marines at the end of WWII and during the Korean war. This pattern was seen as an improvement over the one-piece "jungle" coveralls, which lacking a drop seat, made "relieving yourself" difficult in combat situations. However, the Marines who wore the Camouflage on Tarawa and elsewhere were easy to spot when moving (as opposed to being stationary) and the pattern was discontinued.

The Utilities were designed to be reversible. The outer side is the base green "jungle" camouflage pattern, with the tan or "sand" side inside the jacket and pants. The jacket is in extremely faded, worn, torn, and field-repaired condition. It is ink-stamped Size 38. There are two large tears in the sleeve over where an old field repair is. There is heavy tearing in spots across the jacket, under the collar, and the buttonholes are now wider and fraying.

The trousers are interestingly stenciled on the rear:

DEMONSTRATION
GROUP

This was certainly done during the period and may denote service in a unit used for military deception and rehearsal purposes, possibly as part of landing operations. This will require more research. The trousers are in similar very worn condition with several large field repairs and some tearing in the legs. There is another faded stencil on the interior waist, CONDE(?). This was definitely a set that saw true honest field use, over and over again!

All snaps are black and U.S.M.C “donut hole” buttons on the jacket are present and in good original condition, and all are retained on the trousers as well. Like the regular P1944 utility jackets made of "sage green" HBT fabric, the jacket has trademark "side entry" pockets on the chest, which were originally intended for use with floatation "pillows", as well as carrying the usual paraphernalia of the typical combat Marine.

This is a great opportunity to add probably the most iconic camouflage used by the United States Marine Corp to your collection.
