The “782 Backpack system” (1941 haversack and knapsack) was introduced in mid-1942 to replace the M1928 haversack. It consisted of the upper portion, the haversack and the lower portion, the knapsack. Can be worn in various combinations depending on the requirements of field gear and equipment.

This is a lovely set in good service-used condition. The pack is still very solid with all stitching remaining intact and tight with all of the correct straps (usually modified). The condition is great overall with some minor staining and oxidation bleed. Neither piece is marked anywhere we can find. They are a bit sun-kissed, so this set definitely saw use in the field.

During WWII the U.S. military used cotton webbing and canvas materials to produce personal equipment to be used in the field by its personnel. The predominant color of the USMC equipment from that era was a mustard shade of khaki. As the war progressed and by the time the USMC landed at Okinawa the USMC started issuing their gear in a similar color to the U.S. Army's light OD #3. However, the USMC did not waste precious equipment and the use of mustard/khaki shade canvas gear continued well into the 1950s when the USMC landed at Inchon, Korea. Many Korean nationals termed the Marines "Yellow Legs" because of the mustard/khaki shade canvas leggings.

A great set ready for further research and display.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-wwii-us-marine-corps-p-41-haversack-and-knapsack-dual-pack-system-upper-lower-packs
