original-u-s-wwii-personalized-hawley-paper-m1-helmet-liner-with-complete-suspension-and-sweatband
Original U.S. WWII Personalized Hawley Paper M1 Helmet Liner with Complete Suspension and Sweatband
Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent example of a rare Hawley pressed paper M1 Helmet liner. They were only issued in very small numbers during the early days of World War Two. Their structural deficiencies were quickly noted, and the replacement "low pressure" and later "high pressure" liners were put into planning and production shortly after. The Hawley liners were however all that was available during the earliest days of M1 Helmet production.

These liners are quite delicate, and often were replaced during the war, making them very hard to find. This liner in particular is a wonderful condition example of a Hawley liner. The leather sweatband is in good shape, especially considering the age. The original leather liner chin strap is, unfortunately, broken on one side of the liner, but is mostly present.

The most interesting part of the helmet is the art. It has a name on it, James E. Stradtman. He was born on 2 February 1921 in Sandusky, Ohio. This place is also written on the helmet. He enlisted in the Navy on 21th of August in 1942 and served for more than three years. He survived the war and passed away in 2006.

Next to the name and birthplace, it bears the text “Unie” and on the other side of the liner “Unie” again with an arrow through a heart. We believe that this could be a loved one from James E. Stradtman.

This is an exceptional opportunity to get a scarce Hawley Liner with personal art on it!

A great example, probably the best we will ever see.

Features a RARE Hawley Liner:
The shape and characteristics of the Hawley liner were identical to those of the fiberglass counterpart. The differences were the material of construction and the absence from the front metal grommet, which is where insignia could be placed. The suspension was made of a series of rayon canvas straps. The sweatband had a leather cover, and the whole assembly was riveted to the body of the liner. Small buckles were provided to adjust the suspension. However, doing so was difficult and very clumsy. Combined with the delicate nature of the pressed paper shell, it was not a very good design, and quickly replaced, making them very hard to find.
https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-wwii-personalized-hawley-paper-m1-helmet-liner-with-complete-suspension-and-sweatband
