This is a very nice original U.S. Navy WWII 10-power Officer-of-the-Deck Spyglass, Mk. II, dated 1942 and complete with its matching wooden transit case. Both the telescope and case are serial numbered 6630, making this a particularly desirable matching set. The optics remain clear and the focusing mechanism continues to operate properly.

The telescope is a refracting optical instrument, using an objective lens at the forward end of the tube and an eyepiece at the rear to produce a magnified image. Instruments of this type were well suited to shipboard observation because of their relatively simple construction, narrow profile, and ability to provide useful long-distance magnification.

Refracting telescopes typically have a lens at the front, then a long tube, then an eyepiece or instrumentation at the rear, where the telescope view comes to focus. Originally, telescopes had an objective of one element, but a century later, two and even three element lenses were made. Refracting telescope is a technology that has often been applied to other optical devices, such as binoculars and zoom lenses/telephoto lens/long-focus lens.

This is a great example of a 1942-dated Officer-of-the-Deck Skyglass, Mk. II. This is the MkII Spyglass, with a serial number of 6630. The optic lenses are still very clear and still able to be focused properly. There are markings present on both the telescope and the case.
