Only One Lot Available. During World War Two there was a mass of teaching materials used by the armed forces to train gunners and aircrew in the identification of aircraft, ships and ground vehicles. The ability of servicemen to identify \"friend or foe\" in an instant was crucial to combat survival and the subject of recognition was taught in just about every World War II service school. Trained spotters were important to the war effort and to aid them 1:72 scale plastic models were made. The manufacturers Cruver and Design Center for airplane models are well known as being the primary providers of almost all production models in plastic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a nice lot of two US Airplane identification \/ recognition models made from cellulose acetate by Cruver, dated \u003cstrong\u003eJuly and August 1942\u003c\/strong\u003e. The first is of the P-38 Lockheed Lightning and the second is a British Blackburn B-24 Skua. They are in rough condition with the finish warping heavily, due to deterioration of the cellulose acetate, which is VERY heat sensitive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe P-38 measures 8¼ x 5¾” and the Blackburn measures 5¾ x 7½”. Both are marked with the type of plane they are on the bottom, along with the \u003cstrong\u003eⒸ\u003c\/strong\u003e marking for Cruver. A nice set of models, ready for further research and display.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs in aircraft recognition, the salient recognition characteristics are shown in their simplest form by silhouettes. If this silhouette is further simplified into its basic masses, we obtain a silhouette where the minor details have disappeared, leaving only the real recognition features. It should be noted, however, that in one important respect ship silhouettes differ from those of aircraft. With planes, all three views are of nearly equal importance for correct identification, but in ship recognition, the use of the beam, or side view silhouette, is by far the most important.
