This is an unusual completely inert display assembly consisting of an original U.S. 90mm High Explosive M71 projectile manufactured in 1952 and an earlier 90mm M19 cartridge case dated 1945. The M71 was standard high-explosive ammunition for the American family of 90mm guns, including weapons employed in anti-aircraft, anti-tank, and armored-vehicle roles from World War II into the postwar period.

This assembly is completely inert and contains no explosive material or propellant. Not Available For Export.

The projectile does not fit correctly into the casing of this example, likely due to the absence of the driving bands on the projectile. As a result, the projectile sinks into the casing and is held on a plastic bottlecap to keep it from sinking further. The projectile and casing were likely “married” at one point. The fuse is unmarked.

The round measures roughly 36 ¼” tall but please advise that due to how the projectile sits in the casing, this is not an exact height. The projectile is marked:

HFM LOT 32-52 90MM, M71

This likely denotes a 1952 date. As mentioned, the driving bands are missing on the projectile so the round does not fit properly into the casing. The bottom of the casing is stamped:

90MM, M19
(ORDNANCE DEPARTMENT STAMP)
SMC. 21
1945

The projectile can be removed from the casing for inspection of the interior and as shown and mentioned the set does not fit together properly.

The 1945 M19 cartridge case represents late-WWII manufacture, while the 1952 HFM M71 projectile dates squarely to the Korean War era.

Condition reflects both age and later alteration. The cartridge case shows expected surface wear and handling marks, while the projectile is missing its original rotating band. The unmarked fuze remains installed, and the projectile can be removed freely from the case.

The combination of the 1952-dated HFM M71 high-explosive projectile, 1945-dated M19 cartridge case, surviving fuze, and readily visible missing driving-band area makes this an especially useful study and display piece illustrating the long service life of the U.S. 90mm ammunition family. It should be understood as a later assembled inert display rather than an original complete cartridge, but both principal components are genuine period U.S. ordnance and together span the transition from the final year of World War II into the Korean War era.

90mm HE M71
The projectile consists of a hollow steel forging with a boat tailed base and a streamlined ogive, and may be either the normal fuze cavity or deep cavity type. It is loaded with 2.15 pounds of Comp B (1.68 pounds, deep cavity) or 2.15 pounds of TNT (1.6 pounds, deep cavity). Some earlier rounds are loaded with 50-50 amatol and a booster surround of a small amount of TNT. The supplementary charge consists of 0.3 pounds of TNT. Most deep cavity projectiles are assembled with supplementary charge, spacers, and closing plug; however, some rounds of earlier manufacture were assembled with supplementary charge and PD fuzes or unfused without supplementary charge but fitted with a closing plug.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-wwii-korean-war-inert-90mm-m71-high-explosive-anti-aircraft-round-in-mismatched-m19-casing-dated-1945-1952-missing-driving-bands
