This garment appeared briefly in the film being worn by Cary Grant during one scene.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis is a standard issue U.S. Navy Officer’s Khaki Summer weight Service Coat which was taken in for use by the wardrobe department for the  production.  The costume department had sewn in a property tag, which was common practice at the time, and wrote Cary Grant’s name, the date (June 16, 1943). This was less than a week before principal photography began, and “609” in the production field, and size “40” in the size field. In addition, “U.S. Navy” was stamped in several places within the interior nape of the garment. It should be noted that there is evidence of a submariner’s badge being pinned on the left chest above the breast pocket, as seen in the film.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eLike most pieces of film wardrobe or props, these pieces, especially during this period, were most likely used over and over again until they were liquidated. This would explain the name “Ridgeley” written in in the jacket as well, along with the apparent traces of cuff rank sewn onto each cuff, and the modification done to the Wardrobe Department fabricated Commander’s Shoulder Boards.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis coat was published in Jeff Warner’s Book “U.S Navy Uniforms in World War II Series, Volume 6: Weapons, Equipment, and Insignia: Submarine Service, PT Boats, Coast Guard, other Sea Services” on page 187. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn the pocket of the coat are two pairs of U.S. Navy Commander’s Shoulder Boards, one which is an original pair made by N.S. Meyer and Co. and a Second “prop-quality” pair which were most likely made by Warner Brother’s Wardrobe Department. It should be noted that the star device was removed from the boards, most likely when the jacket was reused in another production (evidence of the star being sewn on each board is evident on the reverse). \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis is a unique piece which appeals to collectors of not only military antiques, but to collectors of Hollywood memorabilia as well.
