This is a nice M1917 helmet that was issued to a United States Marine during or after the Great War. This example is missing the liner and chin strap, but retains a very thick and green-painted period textured finish on the outer shell, with some areas where it has chipped away. Most notably the helmet features a \u003cstrong\u003eP1917 EGA\u003c\/strong\u003e (Eagle Globe Anchor) cap badge to the front, with a clearly \u003cstrong\u003epunched hole\u003c\/strong\u003e, rather than a drilled one. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe shell is maker-marked with a stamping on the underside of the rim that reads \u003cstrong\u003eZC 183\u003c\/strong\u003e. This maker marking indicates that this is a U.S. produced shell, which is further indicated by the solid rivets used to retain the chin strap bales.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe outer shell retains roughly 75% of the heavy textured finish, with loss at the crown and in some other spots. The green finish is very interesting and warrants further research. There is part of the chinstrap still attached with a clip but the majority of the interior is gone.\u003cbr\u003eThe combination of the \u003cstrong\u003eP1917 EGA,\u003c\/strong\u003e punched shell application, \u003cstrong\u003eZC 183 \u003c\/strong\u003emarking, solid chinstrap-bale rivets, surviving chinstrap fragment, and substantial textured green finish makes this an especially interesting USMC-related M1917 shell.
