Item Description
Original Items: Only One Lot of 5 Available. When the United States entered World War I on April 6, 1917, New Jersey joined other states in sending resources. New Jersey's unique location on the busy Atlantic coast and diverse mixture of residents and resources led to other significant contributions to the national effort. New Jersey businesses boomed, ultimately providing munitions, ships, chemicals, automobile parts, and petroleum products to the Allies. The establishment of Camp Dix, Camp Merritt, and other military installations around the state impacted numerous young recruits who flooded into New Jersey for training, and then embarked from Hoboken for action overseas.
This lot is a wonderful opportunity for the State Awards collectors or the young collectors wanting to expand their collection!
The Items In This Lot:
- X2 Dog Tags on Original String: The tags are stamped FELIX SMITH / U.S.A. with the service number 2958736 on the reverse. This is a perfect research opportunity.
- WWI Victory Medal (St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne & Defensive Sector): This is a lovely example with 3 clasps, unfortunately the brooch is missing. The following battle clasps, inscribed with a battle's name, were worn on the medal to denote participation in major ground conflicts: St. Mihiel, Meuse Argonne & Defensive Sector. For general defense service, not involving a specific battle, the "Defensive Sector" Battle Clasp was authorized. The clasp was also awarded for any battle which was not already recognized by its own battle clasp.
- New Jersey WWI Victory Medal: In bronze gilt, obverse illustrating a figure of Liberty on the left holding an unsheathed sword in her right hand and a shield in her left hand, soldiers to the right about to enter battle, with ships and airplanes above symbolic of the other branches of the service, framed by clusters of oak leaves, a blank name plate above the dates ""1917-1918"" at the base, reverse inscribed "PRESENTED BY THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY TO ITS CITIZENS WHO SERVED IN THE WORLD WAR", flanked by laurel branches on either side, the State of New Jersey coat-of-arms below, measuring 36.3 mm, original ribbon suspended from a pinback hanger inscribed "NEW JERSEY". The New Jersey World War Medal was awarded to all citizens of the State who served during the First World War. This included volunteers, draftees and federalized members of the National Guard. It was also provided to the next-of-kin of those who died while in service. New Jersey provided approximately 110,000 men during the First World War. Bastian Brothers Company of Rochester, New York manufactured the medal.
- Paterson, New Jersey WWI Service Medal: This is another state medal/award but was awarded by the city of Paterson NJ. The reverse is inscribed as: PRESENTED BY THE CITIZENS OF PATERSON NEW JERSEY TO THEIR LOYAL FIGHTING SONS.
- Silver Plated Expert Rifleman Badge: The Marksmanship Qualification Badges could be obtained in three classes from high to low with the Marksman as the lowest and the Expert as the highest class. We believe this to be Marine Corps issue and it has the initials J.P. stamped on the back.
This is a wonderful assortment of WWI items featuring the ever so popular State Awards! Comes more than ready for further research and display.
