The tack (harness, saddles, bridles, halters, etc.) used in World War 1 had changed little since the U.S. Civil War in the 1860s fifty years before. For that matter, there have been few changes in the hundred years hence, though saddles and tack are much more padded for both horse and rider, and synthetic materials, not yet invented in 1917, may be used for padding or in place of leather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAn experienced horseman today would easily recognize all the parts of a WW1-era saddle or harness and could quickly put it on their modern horse.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eExcellent condition dark brown leather saddlebags with US oval faintly visible on each flap. Each bag is unfortunately missing the original white canvas removable liners. There is a faint \u003cstrong\u003e“I. F.”\u003c\/strong\u003e next to a number that appears to be \u003cstrong\u003e“15”\u003c\/strong\u003e but we are uncertain if this is a manufacture marking or unit marking. The center leather piece is marked with an \u003cstrong\u003e“A \/ 3”\u003c\/strong\u003e and again, we are not positive if this is a unit marking but it could very well be for \u003cstrong\u003e\"3rd Cavalry A Troop”\u003c\/strong\u003e. Overall condition is good with complete correct straps as seen in the product photos. The leather is cracked and dried in places and the saddlebags do show signs of long service use and wear. There is a repair on one of the buckles which was replaced and another strap that was repaired via glue and duct tape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese M1904 Saddlebags were designed for use with the McClellan Saddle. All the bag straps and buckles are present. Two longer straps to hold the bags in place are present and in very good condition. The leather is pliable for the thickness of the material.
