This is a very nice original U.S. M1905 16-inch rifle bayonet manufactured by Springfield Armory and dated 1919, placing its manufacture in the immediate post-WWI occupation period. The bayonet remains in its original full-length configuration with walnut grip scales and has not been shortened to the later 10-inch M1 configuration, as happened to large numbers of surviving M1905 bayonets during WWII.

The blade ricasso is marked with SA for the Springfield Armory in Springfield Mass, the primary center for the manufacture of United States military firearms from 1777 until its closing in 1968. The handle is a nice aged blue, while the cross guard has some surface rust. The original wooden grip scales are in good condition, with much of the original ribbed texture on the scales.

The scabbard included is an original WWII issued M3 scabbard. The scabbard is marked on the throat with USN MKI which was generally used in conjunction with the practice bayonet. This wasn’t always the case and many troops during WWII used these scabbards with steel bayonets as well. The markings are still crisp and much of the paint is retained on the fiberglass body.

The combination of the 1919 Springfield Armory date, U.S. serial number 1102959, full-length uncut 16-inch blade, original walnut grip scales, surviving late-production military finish, and WWII U.S.N. Mk I scabbard makes this an interesting transitional set spanning the immediate post-WWI and WWII periods. The surface oxidation to the guard and mismatched Navy training scabbard are important condition and configuration details, while the bayonet itself remains a strong surviving example of late Springfield M1905 production.

Specifications:
Blade Length: 16"
Blade Style: Single Edged with Fuller
Overall length: 20“
Crossguard: 3 1/2”
Scabbard Length: 17"

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-wwi-occupation-era-m1905-springfield-16-inch-rifle-bayonet-marked-s-a-with-wwii-m3-usn-mk-i-scabbard-dated-1920
