This is a fantastic U.S. Navy issue Spanish American War and WWI issue “Collins” Model No 1005 Machete, with wood handle and embossed leather scabbard.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe machete features a heavy steel, 15 inch curved blade with grips secured with three brass rivets. The blade surface is very smooth, showing typical age staining, but no pitting or damage. The original Collins markings are not visible on the left side of the blade only \u003cstrong\u003eU.S.N.\u003c\/strong\u003e remains visible.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCollins made these from the Spanish American War until shortly after WWl. They were issued with smooth leather scabbards, as well as tooled leather like this example. It does not have the Collins logo embossed into the leather and is equipped with brass fittings on both ends. The end of the chape is open, which is completely correct, and allows moisture and sap to drip out the bottom. The belt loop is still intact, with some wear, showing signs of use.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn general these Machetes were not US marked. Some of the more earlier ones exhibit a Green Horn handle opposed to wood. The horn had a greenish color and tended to be susceptible to insects\/worms.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCollins records (from Collins Machetes and Bowies 1845-1965 by D.E.
