Before World War One, the M1912 Cavalry Swivel Holster was designed for the soon to be adopted Colt 1911 .45. It was produced from 1911-1916, although commercial models were also made well after WWI. The M1912 is identified by its extended hanger and swivel section. The holster was designed for mounted cavalry troops, so that it could still be tied to the leg while bent. A dismounted model was also produced under contract, identified by still having and extended hanger but no swivel section.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a good period-modified example of the M1912 Dismounted USMC holster. This is the “long drop” version intended for dismounted use that omits the swivel but retains the long strap holding the belt hook. The long drop and belt hook have been entirely removed, with a belt loop secured by three verdigris-covered rivets in its place. This was period-done, possibly in the field during World War I to fit onto the Marine’s belt model of choice. This wonderful and rare example is embossed \u003cstrong\u003eU S M C\u003c\/strong\u003e in an oval on the flap, indicating that this was a military issue holster for the U.S. Marine Corps. These are much harder to find than the standard \"U S\" marked holsters for the army.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is no leg tie down though the holes are there for one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA very good genuine period-modified Model 1912 holster, just perfect for your high grade vintage Colt 1911.
