It is dated 1918, being made during WWI for the M1903 Springfield rifle. It is still in the original issued configuration, with the blued 16 inch blade, blued handle and cross guard, and wooden grip scales. The M1905 was originally designed with a bright steel blade, but upon U.S. entry into WWI in 1917, the specification was changed to a fully blued bayonet. Many of these were reissued for use in WWII, and were parkerized and even cut down, but this one was not.

The blade ricasso is marked with SA, for the Springfield Armory in Springfield Mass, the primary center for the manufacture of United States military firearms from 1777 until its closing in 1968. Below this is the Ordnance flaming bomb and date of manufacture 1918. The other side of the ricasso is marked with U.S. above serial number 853586. The blade is in great condition, with just a few small nicks and light wear to the finish and edge. It does not appear to have had any post arsenal sharpening. The handle and cross guard are a nice aged blue, and the original wooden grip scales are in good condition, with a good amount of the factory "ribbed" surface intact. There is some wood missing due to wear and chipping, so please consult the pictures for specifics on condition.

The scabbard included is an original WWI issue M1910 scabbard, which has a raw-hide clad wooden inner scabbard, with a steel throat. The scabbard still has the canvas and leather "sleeve", which is so often missing. The retaining hooks are still intact, so the bayonet locks securely into the scabbard. The wooden body of the bayonet does seem to have suffered some damage in service, and is cracked lengthwise on one side. The raw-hide covering is also somewhat degraded due to water damage. The leather scabbard tip is intact, though worn.

A very nice 16” WWI M1905 Springfield rifle bayonet by SA, complete with scabbard!
