Original Item: Only One Available. Lieutenant John Douglas Steele was assigned to the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division and was awarded the Silver Star Medal for exceptional courage in World War One. His original Silver Star Medal citation is included in this collection and reads as follows:
HEADQUARTERS 3RD DIVISION AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCES
GENERAL ORDERS, No. 22 8, July 1919.
The Commanding General desires to record in General Orders the valor and devotion to duty of these officers and men of the 3rd Division. Their individual deeds, summed up, have created the glorious record enjoyed by the Marne Division, from those unforgettable days at Chateau-Thierry, in the defense of Paris, to the Victory Drive which began on the banks of the Marne and continued relentlessly until its brilliant conclusion in the Argonne before Sedan:
7TH INFANTRY
Steele, John D., 2nd Lieutenant, 7th Infantry. On the 22nd of July at be Theodorie Fme., he took a section of machine guns under heavy artillery fire, and moved it forward to a wood 300 meters in advance of the front line, from which place he repulsed one counter attack and delivered neutralizing fire for the French Regiment which attacked on our left. Lieutenant Steele displayed exceptional courage and good judgement at a critical time.
