Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a gorgeous War of 1812 - 1820s era militia tin drum canteen which is painted in a drab sort of green with U.S. painted on the front. There is a small tag on the back reading:
GREER
COLUMBIA, PA
We aren’t sure if this was meant to be the soldier who carried it and his hometown, but it makes for a great research project. Canteens of this style were used from the War of 1812 era up into the Civil War, so it’s a very broad piece. The canteen measures roughly 6” in diameter with the spout protruding 1¼” out. It is about 2¼” tall. There are two bales on the sides for affixation of a carrying strap. There is still a cork in the canteen which we believe to be original to it, but of this we cannot be certain. The paint on the canteen is chipping heavily and could use some sort of sealant.
Early canteens like this are becoming harder to find as the years go on. This one is a great research project. Comes ready for further research and display.
