Only One Available. Here we have a stunning original Eagle-Headed U.S. Infantry Officer's saber from the War of 1812 period which retains its original brass-mounted leather scabbard with silver-plated filigreed fittings, an extremely scarce detail! It features a lovely carved bone / ivory grip as well as a gold-inlaid fire-blued blade, which still looks fantastic with fading from age. The sword is all brass mounted with a "P" guard with a very nice "open beak" Eagle pommel.

The 30¾” blade of this example is gorgeous, retaining very much of the original firebluing and gold inlay on the first 2/3rds of the blade. Each side has a fuller towards the spine, with some great engraving on the first half of the blade, which is still all gold enhanced, especially on the ricasso. Very much of the beautiful "fire blue" finish is present on the first half of the blade, something we rarely see! There is some wear, but the blue/purple color is still extremely well-retained for its age, and even has some lovely designs at the transition to bright steel.. The patriotic motifs are phenomenal, and the blade even retains the leather blade buffer, in great shape.

The bone / ivory grip is in great condition with some minor cracking on one side. The eagle head and guard retain some of the original fire-gilting as well. The overall length of this example is 36 5/8”.

The original brass-mounted leather scabbard is in rough condition, not horrible for its age, measuring 31 1/2”. The leather is broken and tearing, but it still fits over the blade well. The filigreed fittings are silver-plated brass with some of the plating still retained, and the filigreed designs are nothing short of tremendous. The middle fitting is retained but is loose as they always are on these. The throat and drag fittings show heavy denting and tarnishing. Due to leather shrinkage, the scabbard doesn’t fit over the last ¼” of the blade, common to see with these.

An outstanding officer’s saber with its original leather scabbard, ready for further research and display.

Dimensions:
Blade length: 31 1/2”
Overall length: 36 5/8”
Scabbard length: 31 1/2”

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-war-of-1812-era-eagle-head-infantry-officer-s-saber-with-fire-blued-gold-inlaid-blade-original-leather-scabbard-with-filigreed-fittings
