Only One Available. This is a tremendous example of a War of 1812 Artillery Officers’ saber, with a lovely wavy stirrup style hilt ending in an eagle’s head pommel, with gorgeous dark horn grips. This model of Eagle Pommel Sword is found on Page 102 of “The American Eagle-Pommel Sword: The Early Years - 1794-1830” by E. Andrew Mowbray, where it is referred to as an Artillery Officers’ Sabre, ca. 1805. This is notable in confirming the sword as a War of 1812 utilized example, rather than a post-war piece.

The sword features a lovely 26” curved blade with one wide fuller next to one very thin fuller. The blade has held up very well considering the absence of its scabbard. There is evidence of past oxidation cleaning which has given the blade a lovely patina, and there are some minor chips in the edge of the blade. Additionally, the ricasso of this example is bolstered for some reason, with the fuller not starting for the first 1½”. Upon closer inspection, this bolstering may be a later “repair” or strengthening of the blade, a great opportunity for further research.

The brass handguard is a bit loose to the blade, but isn’t at risk of loss or breakage. The gorgeous wavy stirrup grip appears to be missing one side, but given how elegantly it was cleaned and sanded down, this may have been done during the period, either as battle damage or an accident repaired by a family member. The dark horn fluted grip is in great shape without any serious cracking, just some minor cracks near the pommel. The eagle’s head pommel is still lovely without any denting.

This is a tremendous example of a genuine War of 1812 Issue saber for an Artillery Officer, ready for further research and display!

Specifications:
Blade Length: 26”
Overall length: 30 3/4”
Crossguard: 4¼”

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-war-of-1812-artillery-officers-eagle-head-pommel-saber-with-wavy-stirrup-hilt-dark-horn-grip-ca-1805
