One-of-a-Kind. This is an exceptionally unusual U.S. Vietnam War-era oversized classroom training model of the Grenade Launcher, 40mm, M79, constructed from painted wood with colored plastic and acrylic moving components mounted over the illustrated launcher. The device was intended to demonstrate the nomenclature and basic mechanical relationships of the M79 on a scale large enough to be clearly viewed during classroom instruction.

The display uses plastic / acrylic moving pieces mounted on top, so soldiers could practice with the replicated functionality of the launcher. It is partially functional in that the barrel can break open and the piece above the trigger can be pushed up to “fire” the launcher. It could possibly be fixed with some work, but this is much more of a display piece now.

The model was not built to last, and the wood frame is now very degraded with the wood showing some material loss and chipping, and the piece does not feel very sturdy anymore. It can no longer stand upright for very long due to the weight and construction. It should be properly preserved and displayed or restored.

The actual M79 grenade launcher was a single-shot, shoulder-fired, break-action weapon chambered for the U.S. 40mm low-velocity grenade system. Army records indicate that deliveries began in 1962, and the launcher became one of the characteristic infantry weapons of the Vietnam War. It was developed to provide individual infantrymen with a weapon capable of reaching targets beyond practical hand-grenade range while remaining considerably lighter and more portable than a mortar.

The M79 became especially recognizable for its short shotgun-like appearance and break-open barrel. During Vietnam it was commonly carried by designated grenadiers within infantry formations, and Army organizational histories record its widespread authorization at squad and battalion level.

The M79 was eventually supplemented and largely replaced in regular U.S. service by the M203, which allowed the grenadier to retain an M16-series rifle while carrying a 40mm launcher. The M203 was type-classified in 1969 and gradually displaced the M79 during the early and mid-1970s, although the older launcher remained in use for specialized roles.

The entire display measures 4 x 19 ½ x 58 ½”. One end of the frame is stamped TD7-1470, the designation code for the device, which was certainly made by a TSC at an Army Fort somewhere during the 1960s. TD likely stands for Training Device, with 7-1470 being the serial number or designation.

Because of the substantial size, weight, and weakened wooden construction, the trainer should not simply be leaned against a wall for display. Proper support, conservation, or restoration would help prevent further structural damage.

The combination of the n58 ½-inch oversized format, painted M79 profile, functional break-action barrel, surviving acrylic and plastic instructional components, partial moving mechanism, TD7-1470 stamp, and visibly handmade wooden construction makes this an exceptional surviving example of Vietnam War-era U.S. military classroom instruction. The missing trigger mechanism, partial loss of function, and deteriorated wooden frame are the principal condition issues, while the surviving break-open demonstration feature provides an unusually direct illustration of how soldiers were taught the basic operation of the M79.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-vietnam-war-era-painted-m79-grenade-launcher-oversized-wooden-plastic-classroom-cutaway-trainer-with-break-action-barrel-td7-stamp
