This is an outstanding original hand-painted unit sign for Company B, 1st Battalion, 103rd Armor Regiment, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, dating to the Vietnam War era. Cut in the form of Pennsylvania’s famous keystone emblem and painted on both sides, the sign measures approximately 35¾ inches by 36¼ inches and would have served as a highly visible unit identifier at an armory, training area, headquarters, or other National Guard installation.

The 103rd Armor Regiment is an armored regiment in the Pennsylvania National Guard first formed in 1941. Its legacy unit, 3rd Battalion, 103rd Armor, is a subordinate command of the 55th Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division. The regiment was first identified as the 103rd Armor Regiment on June 1st, 1959 when it was consolidated with elements of the 110th Infantry and the 108th and 166th Field Artillery Battalions. It was a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System, to consist of the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron and the 2nd Medium Tank Battalion, elements of the 28th Infantry Division.

This is an outstanding hand-painted unit sign that will fit well into any collection surrounding the Pennsylvania National Guard, 28th Division, or Armored regiments. This enormous keystone-cut sign is painted red with a white border, with the top depicting the Distinctive Unit Insignia or DUI of the 103rd Armor Regiment, depicting an alligator with a fish in its mouth in a shield over a scroll reading EXPEDITE. The sign is painted on both sides, with very large holes at the top for hanging, although one hole has broken through the top edge. There is some heavy wear to the paint on both sides, but with a patina like this, it will look outstanding wherever it is displayed.

Despite the wear, the principal lettering, keystone form, regimental insignia, and EXPEDITE motto remain immediately recognizable. The hand-painted construction gives the piece substantially more character than a modern printed or commercially manufactured unit sign.

At approximately 35¾ by 36¼ inches, this is a substantial piece of Pennsylvania Army National Guard history. The combination of its distinctive keystone shape, double-sided hand-painted construction, 103rd Armor crocodile-and-fish insignia, EXPEDITE motto, and explicit CO. B / 1-103D ARMOR / PAARNG identification firmly associates it with Company B, 1st Battalion, 103rd Armor during the Cold War. Because that battalion designation was created in April 1963, the sign is particularly well suited to a collection focused on the Pennsylvania National Guard, the 28th Infantry Division, American armored forces, or the Vietnam War-era National Guard.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-vietnam-war-era-company-b-103rd-armor-regiment-pennsylvania-national-guard-metal-keystone-unit-sign-double-sided-35-x-36
