This is a very good example of the classic Springfield trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine, the weapon used by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. It also comes with its original Saddle Ring and Bar on the left hand side of the wood stock.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe carbine bears Serial # \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e429897\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e on the rear of the receiver, with a nice \"boxed\" \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSWP 1887\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e cartouche on the left side of the stock. The serial number indicates production in approximately January 1889, per U.S. Government records, with stock inspection in 1887. Due to the differences in calendar and fiscal year, this type of mismatch is relatively common. This is definitely a carbine that saw some level of service, based on the overall condition. The stock is in very good original condition, with the expected light wear from age and service. It is still almost fully \"proud\" over the lock plate, indicating that it has not been arsenal reconditioned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe bore is in very good condition, with a mostly bright finish and clear lands and grooves. There is a bit of fouling as well as wear to the lands, so this carbine did see some level of use while in service. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe breech block moves correctly, and the extractor is still present and functional, though we have not tested it with real brass. The saddle ring bar is still present, with the correct saddle ring present. It has the correct butt stock storage compartment for the cleaning rod, though it is unfortunately empty. The Buffington Sight fitted also appears to be the rifle version, with \u003cstrong\u003eR\u003c\/strong\u003e marked on the sight leaf, which looks to have been on the carbine for some time now.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe butt plate is marked \u003cstrong\u003eU.S.\u003c\/strong\u003e and the front band\/guard is \u003cstrong\u003eU\u003c\/strong\u003e marked. Metal finish is quite good, with the original blue faded to a lovely gray patina over most areas. There is some staining but no real rust or pitting. Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., single band, saddle-ring on sliding bar, and carbine \u003cb\u003eBuffington sight\u003c\/b\u003e. Lock is marked with an eagle and \u003cstrong\u003eU.S. \/ SPRINGFIELD\u003c\/strong\u003e, manufactured at the \u003cem\u003eUnited States Armory and Arsenal at Springfield\u003c\/em\u003e, in Springfield, Massachusetts. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe elegant script SWP belongs to Samuel W. Porter, who was the Master Armorer and Chief Inspector of Springfield Armory from 15 September 1879 to 18 June 1894. Additional marks of interest include inspectors' and proof marks around the breech end of the barrel, which are somewhat faded: a \u003cstrong\u003eV\u003c\/strong\u003e over a \u003cstrong\u003eP\u003c\/strong\u003e over an \u003cstrong\u003eeagle's head\u003c\/strong\u003e on the left side just above the stock.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is an excellent opportunity to pick up a very nice example of a legendary U.S. issue firearm.
