This is a very nice example of the classic Springfield trapdoor rifle, the weapon used, in its carbine form, by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The breech block is marked:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ccenter\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003eU.S.\u003cbr\u003e MODEL\u003cbr\u003e 1884\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/center\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1884 the integral Round Rod Bayonet was introduced, which could double as a cleaning rod, a development that met with very limited success. However, it was not fitted to all model 1884s. It was finally replaced in 1892 with the .30-40 caliber Krag bolt action magazine rifle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eModel 1884 rifles saw service in the Spanish American War. The regular army was issued the new Krag rifles and the guard units received the trapdoor. There are a number of stereopticon pictures that show guard units armed with of 1884 rifles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOffered in excellent condition is this trapdoor rifle in .45-70 government caliber,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSerial # \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e460433\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e with a crisp \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSWP 1889\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e cartouche to the rear of the lock screws. The rifle has overall good metal finish and all metal proofs still present, though there definitely are some areas of rust peppering. The serial number indicates production in 1889, as does the cartouche. It has the model 1884 serrated trigger and Buffington sight fitted, along with the correct lower barrel band. However, the stock is in the 1873 configuration, with the standard ramrod and two part trigger guard.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMost likely, it means that the trigger guard was swapped out at some point, probably due to damage, however there is no butt stock storage compartment, so it's possible that a left over 1873 stock was used for some reason. We see no evidence that this is not the original stock.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are some small dents and scratches in the wood, but it still has a great color, and has been finished with a light varnish of some sort. The stock is still fully proud over the lock plate, so it was not sanded down prior to being finished. Another very interesting aspect to this wonderful rifle. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, and a mostly bright finish. There is some oxidation in the grooves, so it looks like this rifle was not cleaned correctly at some point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe butt plate is marked \u003cstrong\u003eU.S.\u003c\/strong\u003e and both barrel bands are \u003cstrong\u003eU\u003c\/strong\u003e marked. Metal finish is a nice aged blued color, with a bit of light peppering in places, especially on the top of the barrel. Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., two bands, two sling swivels with stacking swivel,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eBuffington sight\u003c\/b\u003e, with standard ramrod. Lock is marked with an eagle and\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eU.S. \/ SPRINGFIELD\u003c\/strong\u003e, indicating manufacture by Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIncluded with the rifle is a very nice Springfield Trapdoor model 1873 socket bayonet, with a triangular blade. It has the correct U.S. stamping on the ricasso, and is a lovely aged blue color, that matches the rifle well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe elegant script SWP belongs to Samuel W.
