The carbine has overall good metal finish with all proofs still present. \u003cspan\u003eThe left side of the stock bears a clear government inspector \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eSWP \/ 1880 \u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003ecartouche, indicating final inspection in the same year.\u003c\/span\u003e The serial number indicates production in 1880, unfortunately too late for Little Bighorn. It has the correct two part trigger guard, smooth trigger, and standard siding sight of the model 1873.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe stock is in good original condition, with a great color. It is still slightly proud over the lock plate, so it has not been sanded down excessively. The bore shows crisp lands and grooves, with a mostly bright finish. The breech block extractor is present and functional. Another excellent and rarely seen feature on this example is the butt stock tool compartment, which is covered by a rotating door on the butt plate. This was used to store tools and the cleaning rod, though the compartment is unfortunately empty\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe butt plate is marked \u003cstrong\u003eU.S.\u003c\/strong\u003e and the barrel band is \u003cstrong\u003eU\u003c\/strong\u003e marked. Metal finish is a very nice, with a great faded plum color.  Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., single band, no sling swivels, and a standard rear ladder sight. Lock is marked with an eagle and \u003cstrong\u003eU.S. \/ SPRINGFIELD\u003c\/strong\u003e, manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield Massachusetts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe elegant script SWP belongs to Samuel W. Porter, who was the Master Armorer and Chief Inspector of Springfield Armory from 15 September 1879 to 18 June 1894. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA stylized \u003cstrong\u003eP\u003c\/strong\u003e in a circle under the wrist of the stock indicates that the rifle passed all of its overpressure proof testing. \u003c\/span\u003eAdditional marks of interest include inspectors' and proof marks around the breech end of the barrel: an \u003cstrong\u003eR\u003c\/strong\u003e on top of the chamber, and a \u003cstrong\u003eV\u003c\/strong\u003e over a \u003cstrong\u003eP\u003c\/strong\u003e over an \u003cstrong\u003eeagle's head\u003c\/strong\u003e over another \u003cstrong\u003eP\u003c\/strong\u003e on the left side just above the stock. There is also a \u003cstrong\u003eC\u003c\/strong\u003e on the sight ladder, indicating that it is for a Carbine and not a rifle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is an excellent opportunity to pick up a very rare example of a Springfield Trapdoor Carbine in very good condition.
