This is a nice example of the classic Springfield trapdoor rifle, the weapon used, in its carbine form, by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The breech block is marked:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ccenter\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003eU.S.\u003cbr\u003e MODEL\u003cbr\u003e 1873\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/center\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOffered in excellent condition is this trapdoor rifle in .45-70 government caliber, Serial # \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e262973\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e with a \u003cem\u003e\u003cb\u003eSWP 1884\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e cartouche, overall good metal finish with all proofs still present. The serial number indicates production in 1884, with final inspection in the same year. The stock is in very good original condition, with lots of character. There are some small dents and scratches in the wood, as expected on a rifle this age, but the stock does not appear to have had any major repairs or damage. The stock is still mostly proud over the lock plate, so it has not been reconditioned or worn down excessively. It has a lovely dark brown red color that you only see on aged and oiled walnut.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis rifle was made right before the introduction of the model 1884, however it is almost entirely in the model 1873 configuration. It only has the serrated trigger, and still has the two part trigger guard and Model 1879 rear ramp sight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe bore is in very good condition, probably rating a 9 out of 10, showing clear land and grooves with a mostly bright finish. The ejector is present, and functions correctly, though we have not tested it with real brass. \u003c\/span\u003eThe butt plate is marked \u003cstrong\u003eU.S.\u003c\/strong\u003e and both barrel bands are \u003cstrong\u003eU\u003c\/strong\u003e marked. Metal finish is a nice lightly worn gray color, with a bit of peppering in places. Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., two bands, two sling swivels with stacking swivel, standard sliding sight, and standard ramrod. Lock is marked with an eagle and \u003cstrong\u003eUS SPRINGFIELD\u003c\/strong\u003e, manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield Massachusetts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe included socket bayonet is in very good condition, and has almost all of the original blued finish, with a clear \u003cstrong\u003eU.S.\u003c\/strong\u003e stamp on the ricasso. There are a few areas of light surface rusting on the socket. The scabbard body is dent free, with a nice worn blue, with some areas of surface rusting towards the bottom. The attached swivel frog is in good condition, with the leather worn but solid, and has a \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eU.S.\u003c\/strong\u003e marked rosette on the hinge joint with the leather belt loop. It also is stamped \u003cstrong\u003eROCK ISLAND ARSENAL\u003c\/strong\u003e on the leather, for one of the major U.S. Arsenals, which still exists today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe elegant script SWP belongs to Samuel W. Porter, who was the Master Armorer and Chief Inspector of Springfield Armory from 15 September 1879 to 18 June 1894. The clear stylized \u003cstrong\u003eP\u003c\/strong\u003e in a circle under the wrist of the stock indicates that the rifle passed all of its overpressure proof testing. Additional marks of interest include inspectors' and proof marks around the breech end of the barrel: a \u003cstrong\u003eV\u003c\/strong\u003e over a \u003cstrong\u003eP\u003c\/strong\u003e over an \u003cstrong\u003eeagle's head\u003c\/strong\u003e over another \u003cstrong\u003eP\u003c\/strong\u003e on the left side just above the stock, and a small \u003cstrong\u003eR\u003c\/strong\u003e over the chamber. The upper right corner of the standard sliding sight leaf and the left side of the ramp are marked \u003cstrong\u003eR\u003c\/strong\u003e to indicate that the sight graduations are for a rifle and not a carbine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is an excellent opportunity to pick up a very nice example of a classic U.S. issue firearm.
