This is a very nice example of the classic Springfield trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine, the weapon used by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. It also comes with its original Saddle Ring and Bar on the left hand side of the wood stock.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe serial # \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e342877\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e indicates production in 1886, which matches the legible SWP 1886 cartouche, overall good metal finish with all proofs still present. It was made during the early years of model 1884 production, and if old stock breech blocks were found, they were used, as they were identical aside from the markings. This explains why the breech block is marked this way. The stock is in very good condition, with a great color. It is still partly proud over the lock plate, indicating that it has not been reconditioned during its service life.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe bore is in very good condition, with a mostly bright finish and clear lands and grooves. There is just a bit of fouling and oxidation in places, mostly on the edges of the lands. The breech block moves correctly, and the extractor is still present and functional, though we have not tested it with real brass. The saddle ring bar is still present, with the correct saddle ring present. It has the correct butt stock storage compartment for the cleaning rod, though it is unfortunately empty.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe butt plate is marked \u003cstrong\u003eU.S.\u003c\/strong\u003e and the front band\/guard is \u003cstrong\u003eU\u003c\/strong\u003e marked. The carbine looks to have been well cared for during it's long life, and repeated polishing has removed much of the metal finish, leaving a lightly stained bright steel finish. Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., single band, saddle-ring on sliding bar, and carbine \u003cb\u003eBuffington sight\u003c\/b\u003e. Lock is marked with an eagle and \u003cstrong\u003eU.S. \/ SPRINGFIELD\u003c\/strong\u003e, manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield Massachusetts.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe elegant script SWP belongs to Samuel W. Porter, who was the Master Armorer and Chief Inspector of Springfield Armory from 15 September 1879 to 18 June 1894. The stylized \u003cstrong\u003eP\u003c\/strong\u003e in a circle under the wrist of the stock indicates that the rifle passed all of its overpressure proof testing. Additional marks of interest include inspectors' and proof marks around the breech end of the barrel, which are somewhat faded: a \u003cstrong\u003eV\u003c\/strong\u003e over a \u003cstrong\u003eP\u003c\/strong\u003e over an \u003cstrong\u003eeagle's head\u003c\/strong\u003e over another \u003cstrong\u003eP\u003c\/strong\u003e on the left side just above the stock. The upper right corner of the Buffington sight leaf is marked \u003cstrong\u003eC\u003c\/strong\u003e to indicate that the sight graduations are for a carbine and not a rifle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is an excellent opportunity to pick up a very good example of a legendary U.S. issue firearm.
