This is a very nice service worn of the classic Springfield trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine, the weapon used by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The breech block looks to have been replaced with an earlier model, and is marked:

U.S.
MODEL
1873

Offered in good condition is this trapdoor rifle in .45-70 government caliber, fitted with the correct Buffington rear sight and barrel band, though the ladder is broken off of the sight. It also comes with its original Saddle Ring and Bar on the left hand side of the wood stock.

The serial # 344023 indicates production in 1886, and this carbine saw extensive service after that. Cleaning and wear have removed all of the stock cartouches, and the stock overall shows wear and some past repairs. It has been restored to put it in the best possible light. It has a good color, and the lock plate is fully proud over the stock, showing how much it has been worn over the years. This is definitely a rifle that saw extensive service. The bore is clear, but only shows traces of rifling, with oxidation and rust present.

The metalwork of the rifle shows past pitting, and this carbine was definitely exposed to the elements for some time. A lot of this has been ground out, but can still be seen on most components except for the lock. This also shows that the replacement breech block has been installed on the carbine for quite some time. This carbine is fitted with the correct butt stock storage compartment, where a multi-piece cleaning rod and tools would be stored.
