These saw active service in the Spanish American War of 1898 especially in the tropical climate in Cuba. While often referred to as \"pith helmets\" in the broad sense, it was made from cork, like many European variants, such as the Wolseley pattern used by the British.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis United States Marine Corps USMC Officer's helmet is marked on the underside of the spikebase \/ vent with:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHORSTMANN BROS.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePHILADELPHIA\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe back of the helmet has a size tag, reading 6 ⅞. The hat band is missing much of its stitching as shown but it is still solid. The EGA emblem is outstanding and retains much of its finish. This is not the type of helmet that was worn in the field, but instead one intended for use with the \"dress\" uniform for ceremonial occasions.
