A. Buck

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is without a doubt one of the best powder horns we have ever had the pleasure of offering. Dating to the Revolutionary War-War of 1812 era, this horn has a lovely “two-tone” color, which was achieved by grinding down parts of the horn to reveal the darker color, with a lovely sawtooth pattern at the transition.

This glorious 13” powder horn still retains its original period leather strap, the top hole for which was slit through the center of the strap, and the fact that it still remains wrapped around the throat is a testament to its preservation. The other end is again slit and led through two small holes at the butt, still tied together. The wooden butt has been carved down and is roughly ¼” deep. Within this recess is the inscribed name:

I A x BVCK

This was without a doubt carved during the period, and is meant to read as I.A. BUCK, with the U stylized as a V as was common during this period. We have conducted some preliminary research, and found several possible matches including Isaac Buck, Israel Buck, Isaiah Buck, but as the majority of soldiers during this period did not use their middle initial in military documents, it will require some further digging to get an ID on this fantastic horn.

The horn retains its original rounded plug, but it has unfortunately broken off and the bottom half is stuck in the throat. But the plug will sit fine for a display. The leather strap was tied in the middle very long ago, and we have not attempted to undo it due to its fragility. We would recommend displaying this glorious horn as is, to allow it to be preserved for years to come.

A tremendous powder horn from the late 18th century, in glorious displayable condition. Ready for further research and display.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-revolutionary-war-era-named-two-tone-powder-horn-with-original-leather-carrying-strap-broken-plug-i-a-buck
