This is a stunning British \"Short Land Pattern\" Regimentally marked Brown Bess Flintock musket, featuring the 42\" barrel first adopted by Dragoons 1740. In 1768 it became the standard infantry musket, and remained so until 1797, when the Third or \"India Pattern\" took over. This was the standard Musket of the line during the entire U.S. Revolutionary war, so there's a good chance it was involved.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis example has a lovely walnut stock, which still retains the \"bannister rail\" butt stock, a feature that was basically done away with after 1807. The musket has a full 42\" regulation length, .75\" smoothbore iron barrel, which bears British Proof Marks, which are still mostly clear. They include the British \u003cstrong\u003eCROWN \/ GR \/ Broad Arrow\u003c\/strong\u003e and a partial \u003cstrong\u003eCROWN \/ CROSSED SCEPTERS\u003c\/strong\u003e, indicating Pre-1813 military inspection at the Ordnance Proof house on Tower Wharf close to the Tower of London. The stock is fitted with the correct FOUR ramrod pipes and correct all brass mounts. The barrel marked on the top with \u003cstrong\u003e22'ND REG'T \u003cem\u003eof\u003c\/em\u003e F'T\u003c\/strong\u003e, for issue to the 22nd Regiment of Foot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe early \"single screw\" lock plate is fully marked with \u003cstrong\u003eCROWN \/ G.R.\u003c\/strong\u003e mid lock for King George III, with \u003cstrong\u003eTOWER\u003c\/strong\u003e marked on the tail. It also has the \u003cstrong\u003eCROWN \/ BROAD ARROW\u003c\/strong\u003e \"Lock Viewer's\" marking under the flash pan. The lock surface has the correct curved profile of Pre-1777 manufacture, which later turned to be flattened. The lock has a swan neck cock, indicating pre-1808 construction. The lock is functional, holding correctly at half cock and firing at full. The mainspring is however a bit weak, so it fires slowly, and if the trigger is not held back it can stick at half cock.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lovely all original walnut stock is complete with sling swivels and the correct iron ramrod. It has the correct \"swell\" just rear of the first ramrod pipe. It is really in great shape, showing only light handling marks and small chips in high wear areas. There are no repairs or major cracks that we can see. Really a great example of a Brown Bess stock.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003e22nd Regiment of Foot\u003c\/strong\u003e was first raised in 1689 by the Duke of Norfolk. It first became the 22nd Regt. of Foot in 1751 and was shipped to North America for the French and Indian War 1756-1763. They served at the Siege of LOUISBOURG and at QUEBEC, Heights of Abraham) in 1759 then returned to Europe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey returned in 1775 and were at the BATTLE OF BUNKER HILL under General Gage, and thereafter served in both New York and New Jersey Campaigns in 1776 and took in Rhode Island in 1778. They remained in New York City for the remainder of the Revolutionary War and returned to England in 1782. They were then redesignated the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment, and continued as an independent unit until 2007.
