Original U.S. Remington Rolling Block Argentine Model 1879 Type Rifle in .43 Spanish Caliber
Original Item. Only One Available. In really great condition, this looks to be a Contract Remington Rolling Block Rifle was made for the South American State of ARGENTINA of 1879. This is quite a scarce rifle to find in today's market. The receiver tang is marked E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y., U.S.A, along with the patent information. The model and date information would usually be listed on the barrel knoxform, however this example could be a pre-contract factory sample, or was refurbished at arsenal. It is also possible that it was never sent to Argentina, as it has no traces of the original nocks form markings, and snows little to no use internally. The side of the barrel is marked R.
Around the late 1800s Argentina was a developing world power, and had one of the largest economies in the world. Like any growing power, it needed arms, and as there were not yet local producers up to the task, they contracted out for their weaponry. They would later replace the rolling blocks with the more modern Argentine Contract Mauser rifles towards the end of the 1800s.
The rifle is complete with its ramrod and ladder back sight (very similar to a Werndl back sight), and really is in great condition. The metalwork has a nice dark blued finish, and does not show much wear, if any at all. It almost certainly has been re-blued at some point. The action works great, and still has original arsenal grease. The bore is excellent, with a bright finish and clear lands and grooves. The stock is very good, with a few dents, and just a tiny chunk missing near the left front receiver.
A truly excellent example of the Argentine Model 1879 Type Rolling Block Rifle.
