This is a fascinating small handgun, intended for personal protection that started production right at the height of the Civil War in 1863. Ideal for Gamblers and Travelers alike, this was easily concealed had a capacity of four shots that could be easily discharged by way of a Ring Trigger. The pistol features lovely walnut grip plates, with the the metal finish now turning blue/grey, all in all in very nice condition.

These pepperbox pistols were introduced as a replacement of the original "Elliot's Pocket Revolver", usually known as the "Remington Zig-Zag Derringer", which unfortunately did not fair well. These utilized a rotating barrel mounted on top of the frame, and had a "zig zag" groove to advance it. The mechanism was delicate, so it was replaced beginning in 1863 with the "New Repeating Pistol", intended to directly compete with the Sharps & Hankins and Sharps 4 barrel pepperbox pistols. These featured a similar rotating firing pin, however, like the "Zig Zag", the Remington Elliot is a double action only design, with a unique ring trigger and no external hammer. This reduced chances that the pistol might catch on clothing. It was produced in .22 and .32 rimfire chamberings.

This lovely .32 rimfire example of a "New Repeating Pistol" is very well marked, with serial number 21267 marked on the bottom of the barrel and on the frame inside the breech. Instead, the rear of the action has a rotating breech block, which moves the rimfire firing pin 90 degrees each time the trigger is pulled. The barrel cluster also "tips up" when unlocked by the small catch on the underside of the barrel, which is how the gun is reloaded. This design does not have any type of built in ejector, very common for these pepperbox pistols.

The revolver is in good condition, with a grayish patina overall and no signs of major restoration or refinishing. There is some of the original bluing present inside the breech. It breaks open correctly for reloading, and locks closed using the small latch in front of the ring trigger, which can take some effort to open once closed. It looks to be fully functional, with the rotating firing pin advancing correctly, though the ring trigger must be pulled back hard to dry fire it. We checked the bores, and they all still show mostly bright finishes with clear lands and grooves, though there is some past fouling and oxidation, now removed.

Very nice and rare.
