Original U.S. Pre-WWI Model 1904 Type Private Purchase Campaign Hat With Original Civil War Infantry Hat Cord - Size 7 ⅛

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent example of a Pre WWI (Circa 1902-1910) private purchase Campaign Hat. The hat itself conforms to the Model 1904 campaign hats but lacks the Star ventilation holes in the crown. Two years after the adoption of the 1902 Campaign Hat, the 1904 Campaign Hat, Specification No. 651, was adopted by the Army on December 29, 1904. As shown by this example, the 1904 Campaign Hat was similar in appearance to its predecessor in shape, material, and color. There are no punched ventilation holes (most likely omitted by manufacturer) and has the three rows of stitching which reinforced the hat’s unfolded brim.

The cap itself is in wonderful condition and appears to have been cared for properly these past 110 or so years! The leather sweatband is still present though it is partially detached but is otherwise presented without any extensive damage. The sweatband and the interior crown still retains the 7 ⅛ size labels. The outside crown still retains the silk hat band and the Infantry Cord fitted to the cap is actually an original Civil War example! It was not uncommon for existing stocks of Civil War equipment such as this one to be pulled from storage to continue its life of service in the military. There is fading present on the cord which now presents itself as a light purple instead of blue.

Truly a great example that comes more than ready for further research and display.
