Original Item: Only one available. This is an very nice condition leather cavalry carbine saddle scabbard, made at Rock Island Arsenal in 1904. This is the first time that we have had one of these, and they are quite rare, as even by the turn of the century, the days of mounted cavalry were numbered. It is complete with both attachment straps, though their condition leads us to believe that they are unissued arsenal replacements. Measures approximately 31 inches in overall length.
These scabbards were used to attach to the saddle and tack of Cavalry horses. This kept the carbine at the ready, while also keeping it well secured and protected. Based on the time period, this was most likely used with Krag-Jørgensen Cavalry Carbines, as there was not a carbine version of the 1903 Springfield made.

Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois has been of the major producers of U.S. Arms and Ordnance from after the Civil War until present day. As the name suggests, it is located on Rock Island, on the border of Illinois in the Mississippi river. "H.E.K." are the initials of the inspector who examined it.
