Here we have a very smart looking original Model 1830 Eagle Headed U.S. Officer's sword, typical of the type made in the 1830s and later. The sword is all brass mounted with a standard "D" hand guard and a very nice "closed mouth" Eagle pommel. The grip is wood wrapped with twisted copper wire, which is still in great shape and tight to the tang. The handguard however is somewhat loose, and the original gilding on the brass is still mostly present.

Overall the sword is 34 3/4 inches long, with a 30 inch long etched and fire blued single edged straight blade. Each side has a broad fuller towards the spine that extends half way down the blade, with some very nice gilt etching on the first 1/3 of the blade, which has also been "fire blued" (nitre bluing), still well retained in many areas. The rest of the blade show s some light staining in areas, but nothing major. It really is a quite nice blade.

The left side of the ricasso is marked with the manufacturer's logo of a Königskopf (King's Head), the logo of Gebrüder Weyersberg, Waffenfabrik, founded in 1787 by the brothers Johan William and Peter to manufacture sword and knife blades. By 1850 they were located on Kölnerstrasse in the Ohligs area of the City of Solingen. From 1859 onward they operated a factory on Hochstrasse in the same area. Called "The City of Blades", Solingen is a world-renowned edged weapon area, with a history dating back to the middle ages. The Weyersberg family itself had a history of swordmaking going back at least 6 generations. The company had numerous contacts and customers in Europe, and supplied weapons to Napoleon's army, as well as to the Prussian and Russian armies during the 19th century, until they merged with W.R. Kirschbaum in 1883, forming W.K. & C. For more information please see J. There are also some lovely engraved / embossed grape vine designs on the scabbard body, which are repeated on the hanger bolsters. It also has a fantastic Federal Eagle design, which has a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM above it, with 13 shooting stars above that in an arc. There are some dents on the scabbard, but they do not interfere with sheathing the blade at all.

A really lovely example with a great scabbard, ready to display!

Specifications:
Overall length: 34 3/4”
Blade length: 30"
Blade Style: Single Edged with Fuller
Guard dimensions: 5" width x 4 1/2” length
Scabbard Length: 31 1/2"

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-pre-civil-war-era-m1830-officers-eagle-head-sword-by-gebruder-weyersberg-with-fire-blued-blade-engraved-brass-scabbard
