Jannasch of Kalamazoo - circa 1850

Original Item: One-of-a-Kind. This is a fantastic U.S. made example of a "Combination Gun", which is double barrel gun where one barrel is a rifle, and the other a shotgun. This way the hunter would be prepared for both flying and running game. Unlike most that we have seen, this one is set up "over & under", with an octagonal .41" bore rifle barrel on top, and a 20 bore fowler barrel on the bottom. Most eye-appealing, this gun never had any type of wooden fore stock, as the the double barrels preclude such a thing. The gun measures 48 inches in overall length, with a 31 inch long barrel assembly.

It is still clearly stamped on the top of the barrel by the maker, or at least the person who assembled it:

C.F. JANNASCH clearly. The JANNASCH family originates from DRESDEN in SAXONY, GERMANY where they are recorded to have worked as gunsmiths in the 1700's. Much of the country from Pennsylvania westward was first populated by German immigrants in the 18th and 19th centuries, many of which brought with them valuable skills from the European continent.

The Walnut butt stock is in excellent condition and it has a brass "hook" butt plate, as well a brass trigger guard with two finger holds for accuracy and a trigger for each barrel. There is also a "shield" shaped "German Silver" escutcheon on the left side, which may have been personalized to the owner at one time, but now is blank. There are two ramrods held in place by pipes attached to the sides of the barrels, one for the rifle and one for the fowler. They look to possibly be replacements, however both are properly brass fit on both ends.

We tested the functionality of the locks, and both work correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full. The condition of the bore on the rifle is quite good, showing a bright finish and rifling which is a bit rounded. The fowler fore shows a bit more wear, and some oxidation, as it would not be cleaned out by the slug like the rifled barrel would be.

A very interesting double barrel weapon in great shape, read to research and display!

Specifications-

Years of Manufacture: circa 1850
Caliber: Double Barrel - 20 Bore Shotgun and .41" rifle with 6 groove Rifling
Ammunition Type: Lead Shot/ball and Powder
Barrel Length: 31 Inches
Overall Length: 48 Inches
Action: Back Action Percussion Locks
Feed System: Muzzle Loading Over & Under

NOTE: International orders of antique firearms MUST be shipped using UPS WW Services (courier).
