Just purchased at a recent military auction! Here is an octagonal barreled very upmarket "Kentucky" style target rifle, which more correctly is known as a Pennsylvania Rifle. It is in one of the larger calibers we usually see these in, .50", and has a very heavy octagonal barrel with six groove rifling. The lock plate is marked with the manufacturer information:

WHITMORE & WOLFF
PITTSBURGH

There is also quite a bit of decorative engraving on the lock, showing a hunting scene with pheasants taking flight. We estimate that this octagonal barrel rifle was made about 1840, and features all brass mounts, except for the nose cap, which looks to be pewter alloy. The ;half length stock is lovely, made of very attractive tiger maple, complete with a brass patch box on the right side of the butt stock.

As with most target rifles, this example is fitted with a "set trigger", where depressing the rear trigger first until it clicks and just touching the front trigger discharges the weapon, hopefully with great accuracy. It is fully functional at present, and the "set trigger" can be engaged either at half cock or full cock. The lock will not fire at half cock, even with the set trigger engaged, as is correct.

The bore is in great shape, clean with bright finish and crisp rifling, with little sign of use. The front of the barrel has a brass globe aperture front sight, and the rear barrel tang is fitted with a threaded 'lollipop' style peep sight, which is currently frozen. The wooden cleaning rod is original, and has a covered "worm" extractor on one end, though the "ramming" end has lost the brass cap unfortunately.

A very nice example of a mid 19th Century "Pennsylvania" target rifle, ready to add to your collection!

Specifications-

Year of Manufacture: c.1840
Caliber: approx .50" six groove rifling
Cartridge Type: Ball and Powder
Barrel Length: 32 Inches
Overall Length: 48 Inches
Action type: Side Action Percussion Lock
Feed System: Muzzle Loading

NOTE: International orders of antique firearms MUST be shipped using UPS WW Services (courier).
