This is a very attractive original Operation Enduring Freedom-era national flag of the Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan, displaying the black, red, and green tricolor with a gold Afghan national emblem and decorative gold fringe. Dating to the brief transitional-government period of approximately 2002–2004, this is a particularly interesting flag from the opening years of the U.S. and coalition campaign in Afghanistan.

Following the fall of the Taliban government in late 2001, the Afghan Interim Authority was established under the Bonn Agreement. In June 2002, the Emergency Loya Jirga established a Transitional Authority under Hamid Karzai, with the government officially known as the Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan, or TISA. The transitional government remained in place while a permanent constitution and new political institutions were developed.

The national flag adopted during this period returned to the traditional vertical black, red, and green tricolor. Variations are documented with either white or gold versions of the Afghan national emblem in the center of the red field, making the gold emblem on this example consistent with known flags of the transitional period. The transitional flag was introduced in early 2002 and superseded following adoption of the new Afghan constitution in January 2004.

The flag measures roughly 37 ½ x 62” and has the normal fold creases. There is a white transparent header with a hole for a pole, and tie strings at one end.

The combination of the short-lived 2002–2004 Transitional Islamic State design, gold Afghan national emblem, double-ply synthetic construction, gold color fringe, pole sleeve and ties, and 37 ½ x 62-inch size makes this an excellent representative artifact from the formative years of post-Taliban Afghanistan. Its transitional-government symbolism places it directly within the political and military environment encountered by U.S. and coalition personnel during the opening phase of Operation Enduring Freedom.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-operation-enduring-freedom-oef-transitional-islamic-state-of-afghanistan-national-flag-with-fringe-usgi-bringback-37-x-62
