Original U.S. New England Militia Flintlock Musket with 49" Barrel and British Trade Lock c. 1790
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a truly excellent example of a very rare U.S. New England Militia Musket, which was the result of the U.S. Congress "MILITIA ACT" of May 8th 1792. This act required that each State was required to raise a Militia of every able bodied man aged 18 to 45 to defend its own territory when called upon. It required each man to arm himself with a musket of various specifications, including a bayonet to be available for instant use in case of a National Emergency. Each State was organize itself into Companies, Battalions, Regiments, Brigades and Divisions of prescribed size and strength to be available for three months and up to a year Government service. Each State and individual had to provide a suitable Musket with which the Militiaman was expected to be totally proficient.
The wonderful publication UNITED STATES MARTIAL FLINTLOCKS by Robert M. Reilly devotes an entire Chapter to these New England Militia Flintlock Muskets, on pages 110 up until 122.
Here we offer an exceptional example, full stocked in Cherry wood with all brass mounts. The Flintlock mechanism is a Trade lock from England still bearing a partial name of:- JOHN ....ER and WARRANTED. The bore size is approximately .67", a popular size in use at the time. There is a BAYONET LUG on the under side of the barrel at the muzzle directly in front of the wood stock, which is not fitted with a nose cap. It is QUITE long, measuring out to 65 inches overall, with the long 49 inch smoothbore barrel.
These 1795 era U.S. New England MILITIA muskets are exceptionally rare and this particular one has an extra long barrel all in a very superior condition. Fully cleaned and ready to display!
