This is an excellent non-firing display example of the iconic U.S. M1 Garand rifle, assembled around an original demilitarized International Harvester receiver with mostly original military components. The receiver has been flame cut and then rewelded, with a portion omitted, and the bolt welded in place inside of the The fitted barrel is a non-functional reproduction that has no rifling and was never intended to function as a firearm barrel. The action has also been rendered non-functional, making this an impressive display representation of the rifle that served as the standard U.S. infantry arm through World War II and the Korean War.

International Harvester Corporation entered M1 Garand production after World War II as part of the renewed American requirement for service rifles during the Korean War period. The company received its first M1 contract in 1951, with substantial production beginning in 1953 and continuing through 1955, with final deliveries completed by early 1956. International Harvester ultimately delivered 337,623 M1 rifles, substantially fewer than either Springfield Armory or Harrington & Richardson, making original IHC receivers particularly desirable among Garand collectors.

The rifle retains the maker markings on the back of the receiver:

U.S. RIFLE
CAL. .30M1
INTERNATIONAL
HARVESTER
4639917

The rifle is fitted with an especially attractive earlier Springfield Armory stock bearing a strong boxed SA / GAW cartouche on the left side together with the U.S. Ordnance Department crossed-cannon inspection stamp. The initials GAW identify Col. George A. Woody, commanding officer of Springfield Armory during the later years of World War II. Stocks bearing this marking are associated with wartime Springfield Armory M1 production, and the SA / GAW marking was also used on some rifles passing through Springfield during wartime rebuild work. This stock therefore predates the International Harvester receiver and reflects the mixed original-component character commonly encountered on rebuilt or subsequently assembled Garands.

The underside of the stock behind the trigger guard is a P in a circle. During build or rebuild, a slightly overpressured round is fired after assembly to verify integrity of the rifle followed by 7 standard rounds (full en bloc) and if everything functions correctly, the stock is stamped with the P in a Circle.

This example combines an original post-WWII International Harvester receiver with a particularly well-marked WWII Springfield Armory SA / GAW stock and predominantly original U.S. military components. Although it should not be interpreted as a factory-original or matching International Harvester rifle, its contrasting WWII and Korean War-era components provide an interesting representation of the long service life of the M1 Garand and the extensive interchangeability that characterized U.S. military maintenance of the type. As a permanently non-firing display piece, it offers the appearance and substantial feel of an original M1 Garand while preserving a desirable International Harvester receiver and an excellent wartime Springfield stock.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-korean-war-era-demilitarized-m1-garand-rifle-by-international-harvester-with-wwii-sa-gaw-stock-non-functional-barrel
