Original U.S. Kentucky Percussion Set Trigger Rifle with Lock by J. Doherty and Barrel by J.N. Gardner c. 1840

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available: From an old Collection that has been in storage for close to 100 years, here is a Kentucky style PENNSYLVANIA long Rifle, with an octagonal 32" barrel, measuring 48" in overall length. The bore is approximately .39", the usual size for these rifles, and it still has intact rifling in the bore.

The rifle is fitted with a double set trigger and with German Silver mounts throughout, including a patch box in the right side of the butt. The left side of the butt has been cut with a raised cheek piece. The tang is missing its vertical tang sight, only a hole where it stood remains. There also was once a sight on the rear of the barrel, but it was removed, and the dovetail filled. The fore sight is absent from its dovetailed slot.

The lock is signed J. DOHERTY, who worked in PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA, and displays some nice engraving, along with a lovely Hunting Dog image. The lock does appear to have been modified at some point, and the tip of the hammer is unfortunately missing.

The top of the barrel is marked J.N. GARDNER / SCRANTON. PA. / 105., but we have not been able to find out any information on this maker.

An All American Percussion Kentucky style sporting Rifle, ready to display!
