In lovely matured condition, this is a very nice brass \u003cstrong\u003eVerner's Pattern VIII\u003c\/strong\u003e Prismatic field compass. These have a glass prism and a glass window on the lid with a line across it, which is used to determine the bearing of an object in the distance. It has a dry-card compass \u003cspan\u003ewith a both a momentary bearing lock and transit lock, \u003c\/span\u003ewhich rotates in the base. When the compass card stops, the required bearing is read off through the prisms. The MkVII version had a manual transit lock, while the MkVIII added an arm to the top lid that automatically locks the card. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe back of the case is marked inside the rubber pad:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ccenter\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCRUCHON \u0026amp; EMONS\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBERNE\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNo. 749\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e1918\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/center\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese were usually issued to British forces, however this fine Swiss-made example is actually marked \u003cstrong\u003eCORPS OF ENGINEERS U.S. ARMY\u003c\/strong\u003e around the top window. There is also no broad arrow on the bottom, so this was definitely purpose made for U.S. forces, however it is identical to the British Issue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis Verner's Pattern field Compass would have been used in the Trenches by Officers in the first World War. Very well made and fully functional, this comes in its original brown leather carry case marked \u003cstrong\u003eMODELE \/ DEPOSE\u003c\/strong\u003e faintly under the lid.
