This example was manufactured or retailed by Louis B. Stilz \u0026amp; Bro. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is etched on one side of the blade with the name \u003cstrong\u003eD.B. FULLER M.D.\u003c\/strong\u003e, identifying the sword to Doctor Dwight Bailey Fuller, M.D., who served as a 1st Lieutenant Surgeon with the National Guard of Pennsylvania, serving in a battery of an NGP Field Artillery regiment. There is more research to be done, but we did find a sketch of him in a newspaper article.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis officer's sword was adopted on August 28, 1860 acting upon the officer who would rarely if ever be called upon to wield a sword in battle. It was not mandatory until after the close of the Civil War, however in 1872, this sword became mandatory for all officers except medical staff, paymasters, mounted officers of infantry, cavalry \u0026amp; light artillery. The blade is embellished on both sides with an etched foliate and an American Eagle. Blade is semi-bright with scattered age discoloration spots. One side is etched with the name \u003cstrong\u003eD.B. FULLER M.D\u003c\/strong\u003e.. The ricasso on one side is etched with:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLOUIS\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eE. STILZ\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u0026amp; BRO.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePHILA.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e-P.A.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Sword hilt is brass, with the handle having a sharkskin-wrapped wood handle with the wire wrap still present but heavily worn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe blade has some moderate oxidation in spots. The hilt has some looseness to the blade, but otherwise it’s in fair condition. The guard on this one folds on one side, but the brass has heavy wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe brass scabbard has a heavily corroded, dark gray\/brown patina and is adorned with two brass mounts and a brass drag; the brass throat is still present. Both mounts exhibit a floral display. The top mount sports two rings while the lower mount has only one. The brass drag features flowers on both sides. Both sword mounts and the drag are tight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a very handsome sword which is a must have for the collector of 19th Century U.S. Militaria.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFuller’s Obituary:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePHILADELPHIA, May 18—Dr. Dwight Bailey Fuller Jr., physician, ophthalmologist and a member of the Common Council from 1909 to 1911, died Sunday in the Philadelphia General Hospital at the age of 85. Born in Buffalo, Dr. Fuller was graduated from the Dental Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1887 and from the Medical School there in 1892. He was president of the Fuller Land and Improvement Company. and was a member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a Mason and a former member of the Union League and the University, Medical, Philadelphia Country and Art Clubs.
